Why Hidden Sugar is a Problem

One of the simplest but most powerful shifts I make with my clients is uncovering where hidden sugars are sneaking into their day without them even realising. And when we start making small changes—energy improves, cravings reduce, bloating eases, and weight starts to shift.

So, I put together this helpful guide on where sugar might be hiding, how to spot it, and easy swaps you can make without overhauling your whole routine. You might think you’re eating healthy, but sugar is sneaking into your diet in unexpected ways.

Many foods marketed as “low fat” or “healthy” contain added sugars, which can:

✔️ Cause energy crashes and increase cravings
✔️ Lead to weight gain and bloating
✔️ Disrupt sleep and mood
✔️ Contribute to long-term health issues like insulin resistance

Where Sugar is Hiding in Your Diet

Sugar isn’t always listed as just "sugar." It goes by many names, such as dextrose, maltose, high-fructose corn syrup, and evaporated cane juice.

Watch out for these common culprits:
❌ Flavored yogurts and granola
❌ Protein bars and “healthy” snacks
❌ Sauces (ketchup, BBQ sauce, salad dressings)
❌ Breakfast cereals and instant oatmeal
❌ "Low-fat" or "diet" foods

How to Spot & Reduce Hidden Sugar

Read Labels: Check for "added sugars" and ingredients ending in "-ose."
Make Simple Swaps: Choose plain yogurt, whole foods, and unsweetened versions of sauces and snacks.
Balance Your Blood Sugar: Eat protein, fiber, and healthy fats at every meal to reduce cravings.

Small Changes, Big Results

Cutting back on hidden sugar helps regulate energy, improve sleep, and reduce bloating.
You don’t need to cut sugar completely—just be mindful of where it’s coming from and make simple swaps.
