Navigating Christmas, damage limitation tips!

December is upon us already...
The holiday season is about joy, connection, and celebration—but it doesn’t have to mean feeling sluggish or derailing your health goals. During my recent trip to remote Norfolk Island (Australia) to visit family, I practiced a few simple strategies to balance enjoyment with wellness, and I’d love to share them with you!
While away, I stayed active by finding cool places to explore by foot, hit up some walking tracks, daily swims & squeezing in quick bodyweight workouts.
👉 Tip: During the holidays, it helps to aim for a short walk after meals or play a fun family game that gets everyone moving. These small bursts of activity can help keep your energy levels up.
I made sure to pack protein-rich snacks like nuts, biltong & natural protein bars to avoid grabbing sugary or processed snacks on the go. Supermarkets usually offer houmous, veg sticks which can be a super calorie saver.
👉 Tip: Before heading to holiday parties, enjoy a small snack with protein and fiber, This way, you won’t feel overly hungry and overindulge when you arrive.
I always prioritise hydration by carrying a reusable water bottle everywhere. It kept me energised & avoids false hunger signals that can lead to cravings.
👉 Tip: Start each day during the holidays with a big glass of water. If you’re enjoying festive beverages, alternate each drink with a glass of water to stay balanced.
On my trip, I focused on balance, not restriction. I enjoyed local treats but made conscious choices most of the time.
👉 Tip: Give yourself grace this holiday season. Enjoy your favorite festive foods in moderation and focus on how you want to feel—energised and light, not sluggish and guilty. Sticking to an 80/20 Rule can be ideal for this.
Before leaving for my trip, I set intentions like staying active and making mindful food choices. Having this focus helped me enjoy without overindulging.
👉 Tip: Set a simple holiday intention, like “I’ll prioritise moving my body daily” or “I’ll savor festive treats without guilt.” Give yourself a few check in times to reflect on the choices you're making.
